Chapter 13

Ellery waited too long to follow Nara after she had made her way over the river that had appeared outside his gate. He wanted to be with her—knew he needed to be with her. Apart, they were in far more danger and had far less chance of making it to the end of this without losing one of them again. But something had to change; something had to be done differently. Nara was right. Someone wanted her for a reason, and the only way to find out how to be together was to send her out alone.

He drew a deep breath and stepped into the water at the gate. It flowed around his boot as it did around the stones that protruded from the constant flow. Once, Nara had said the path looked like a riverbed. He wondered how he had never seen it before. Now it was as though the world was trying to prove her right.

He took another step in the shallow water. It was warm, as though it had run through the sun for days, and it soaked into his breeches. But it did not worry him, not like the rain had or the water in the courtyard that first time, when the Mer tried to drag him beneath the icy water. He took another step, and then another. He had watched Nara skirt around the water as though she had seen something in it or understood something to be in it. It might be that the Mer lurked beneath the surface in some way, transforming into tiny fish and hiding beneath or around the rocks, but Ellery doubted they would be so subtle.

He stopped and leaned over to look into the water. There was no sign of life, no sign of anything other than the water flowing over the sandy bottom of the little river and around the smooth, worn stones that protruded from it.

Ellery straightened up and looked over the river, back to the gate where he had stood for so long watching what he could not understand. As he glanced back to the closed gate, he wondered just how safe and protected the little cottage was. Was it possible that the Mer would not or could not enter such a space? He wondered then if they were playing with him, showing him that they could reach him and Nara at any time. Yet they had not been able to take from him what they wanted; he was of no use to them at all.

He tried to remember the bodies that had lain across the courtyard. Two of them had appeared as though they had been there for some time, many months at least, the other newer. He had wondered then if they were a ploy. He and Nara had seen that before, a creature holding out victims to draw them in only to find they were not. Like the women he had seen, and the child. He still could not determine what they were.
